Tonari Gumi-JCCA First Joint Golf Tournament Great Success!!

L to R: Perry Nishihata, Louise Nakano, Victor Omaye, Kentaro Kusumoto

Blessed with outstanding weather, the first TG/JCCA Golf Tournament got off to a wonderful start with nearly 20 foursomes teeing off at the beautiful Meadow Gardens Golf Course in Pitt Meadows.  With traditional longest drives and nearest to the pin contests along the way, the game was also complemented by a challenging marshmallow drive. While extremely beautiful and well-maintained, Meadow Gardens does have a lot of water hazards and one of the well-participated contests was the “lost ball” estimate.  I believe the winning guess was in the neighbourhood of 275 balls!

The buffet dinner was excellent and the evening was capped off with many participants carrying or ‘riding-off’ with their raffle prizes (one of the feature prizes was a bright red Schwinn bicycle from Ross Saito and Canadian Tire).  The silent auction was also well attended with a lot of interest being shown in the special Miura Golf wedge that was donated by Miura Golf and Tom Kusumoto and the two Canucks Club Seat Tickets contributed by Gordon Kadota.  The highlight of the Silent Auction was the announcement of the winner of the full golf club membership donated by Meadow Gardens.  Special thanks goes to Ms. Takako Kojima, Vice President of Meadow Gardens for donating the membership to Tonari Gumi and the JCCA.  All in all, the evening was a wonderful success with all of the net proceeds going to the Joint JCCA and Tonari Gumi “Home Away from Home” Building Fund in order to complete the new Tonari Gumi Seniors’ Drop-In and Community Outreach Centre being built at 42 West 8th Avenue in Vancouver.

Many thanks to the organizing committee comprised of Shag Ando and Ed Teranishi (co-chairs), Derek Iwanaka, David Iwaasa, Katsuko Shioiri, Ken Nishi, Michael Yamamoto and Perry Nishihata.  The scoring was efficiently done by Ken and Perry.  Also thanks to our other able volunteers:  Ed Hamazaki, Derek Imai, Jane Iwaasa, Reiko Narita and Ryo Terui.

The Tournament Winners were as follows:

Low Gross:  Mens–Kentaro Kusumoto (74) and Kendal Yonemoto (75); Ladies–Louise Nakano (96); Seniors–Victor Omaye (84).

Callaway:  1st–Perry Nishihata; 2nd–Larry Langlais; 3rd–Ray Soo; 4th–Fred Yada; and 5th–Doug Yamamoto.

We are especially grateful for all of the many donations (hole sponsors, raffle and silent auction donors) and the participation of so many individuals.  For a complete listing of donors, please check the August 2013 Bulletin.
