Tonari Gumi has been offering various services for over 35 years to reach out to those who have become homebound due to old age and illness. We are always striving to improve our services to extend our hands to those in need.
1) Support Group for family caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia
Life for caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia can be quite difficult. This is because these caregivers may find it hard to communicate with others about their emotional disturbances, and because the symptoms of the people they care for continue to worsen, despite their efforts.
There are local support groups in many communities. For caregivers, however, they can still experience difficulty when it is challenging for them to express their feelings and to comprehend information in English. To overcome this language barrier, Tonari Gumi has organized a Japanese support group for family caregivers of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. The objective of this group is to provide family caregivers with a safe environment where they can exchange their feelings, experiences and information in the Japanese language. It is held from 1:30 pm to 3 pm on the second Wednesday of the month.
2) Meals on Wheels: Japanese style Meal Delivery Service
If it is getting challenging for you to prepare meals and you miss tasty Japanese food, this weekly service will bring you a little joy!
To Vancouver residents: Our volunteer drivers deliver delicious Japanese style meals prepared by our volunteers. The meals are delivered on Mondays.
To Burnaby Residents: We have partnered with “Hi Genki Japanese restaurant” in Burnaby. Our volunteer drivers pick up and deliver their lunch boxes on Wednesdays.
To Richmond Residents: We have partnered with “Izumiya Japanese Marketplace” in Richmond. Our volunteer drivers deliver their lunch boxes on Tuesdays.
To residents of other cities: We are hoping to expand the service. Please contact us if you are interested.
3) Telephone Buddy Service
Are you finding yourself spending more time at home and missing interaction with others because of your physical limitation?
Our volunteers make regular phone calls to seniors who feel lonely because they do not have family or friends close by, or they are shut-in due to old age or illness. The Telephone Buddy Service is also great for caregivers who may be feeling over-loaded and in-need of contact with others. Our current phone recipients are enjoying weekly conversations and are always looking forward to the next call!
4) Friendly Visitation Service
Is your loved one at a care facility or hospital and looking for someone who can regularly visit and talk in the language he/she is comfortable with?
Our volunteers pay regular visits with seniors at care facilities or hospitals as a companion. Our current visitation recipients are delighted with regular visits and interaction with our volunteers.
No membership is required to receive these services. Tonari Gumi staff will conduct an assessment to determine eligibility. If you are interested in receiving any of these services, please contact us at 604-687-2172 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
