Tonari Gumi provide outreach services throughout a year. Currently proving 3 following services.

  1. CRA Community Volunteer Income Tax Program – CVITP

  2. Advance Care Planning Workshop

  3. Peer Support Certificate Course

1. CRA Community Volunteer Income Tax Program – CVITP

Tonari Gumi offers as a part of CRA’s Community Volunteer Income Tax Program, Income Tax Clinic during March every year. Our services base is Drop off/Pick up style. The clients are to drop off their tax related documents, and pick up after filing is done by our CRA registered volunteers.

Eligibility

• Be 65 years of age and over

• Meet CRA’s CVITP program eligibility. For detail click here (CRA weblink)

• In-person drop off and pic up at Tonari Gumi office in Vancouver.

2. Advance Care Planning Workshop

Tonari Gumi Community Services staff host Advance Care Planning workshops for the group of 3 to 5 participants starting in May 2025 (TBD).


The workshop is aimed to:

  • Recognize your wish. Health care, living environment, financial assistance.

  • Visualize your wishes and goals by writing on the My Voice in Action (FH)

  • Decide on Who should you explain your wishes to?

  • Decide on Who can fulfill those wishes?

  • Start conversation with those you wish to be involved with your decision making process.

  • Follow up workshop to discuss progress and offer support.

Eligibility

  • Tonari Gumi member 60 years of age and older

3. Peer Support Certificate Course

Tonari Gumi offer free Peer Support Certificate Course annually.

The course materials and instruction provided by Instructors with over 10 years of experiences specialized in Seniors Peer Support, and financial grant from the Port of Vancouver.

After successful completion, you will be added to Tonari Gumi's Community Services' Volunteer list for an opportunity to use your knowledge and gain experiences.

Eligibility

  • Registered as a volunteer with Tonari Gumi – Japanese Community Volunteers Association.

  • Undergo Criminal Record Check and receive clearance letter

  • Able to attend 32 hours of online and in-person course.

  • Able to volunteer for Tonari Gumi Community Services

Service Area

  • Your local area of residence in-person or via telephone
