Services
Tonari Gumi - Japanese Community Volunteers Association began its activities in the 1970s by young Japanese Canadians and new Japanese immigrants, providing grassroots support to Japanese Canadian seniors who had returned from their post-war forced relocation sites to the former Japan town in Vancouver. Many of these seniors lived in isolation, facing difficulties in language barriers, and finding support due to lack of resources.
The organization aimed to provide support and share a space where people could gather in comfort, enjoy meals, and participate in programs. It was officially registered as a nonprofit organization in 1974 and recently celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2024.
Tonari Gumi Community Services provides navigational support to Japanese-speaking individuals and Japanese Canadians of all ages.
